“Grandpa likes the Taliban”

Jury statement:
Particularly impressive is the well composed entanglement of the private and societal dimensions of the story. The link between the family and the political framework is captivating. […] It is highly respectable that this film reports about aspects that are almost unknown in Germany, and thereby permits inevitable dissonances. […] Apart from the personal level, this film has its strongest moments when it deals with the complexity of the situation in Afghanistan.

Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize of the European Parliament

„Reconstruction of a catastrophe“

Jury statement:
„The joint investigation by the Greek investigative outlet Solomon, in collaboration with Forensis, the German public broadcaster StrgF/ARD, and the British newspaper The Guardian revealed how the deadliest migrant shipwreck in recent history happened as a result of the actions taken by the Greek Coast Guard. It also reveals inconsistencies in the Greek authorities’ official accounts.”

“Israel and Gaza: Living in between terror and war”

Jury statement:
“The production is partial in the best sense, aligning itself with empathy and humanity. Rather than imposing any particular judgments on the audience, it offers impressions and insights that allow viewers to form their own opinions about the current situation between Israel and Palestine.”

2022
CIVIS Media Award

Nominee, “Seehofers 69”

Jury statement:
„An unobtrusive, but essentially relentless reckoning with Seehofer’s derailment. The absurdity and cynicism of bureaucratic politics are substantiated by cleverly built-in letters from the authorities and confronted with the reality of life of those affected. They are not treated as victims, but as equals. The journalistic access is committed, but not without distance.“

Jury statement:
„The report Suffering on Lesvos shows the oppressive conditions in the refugee camps on Lesvos in authentic images from close up. That is very good journalistic work, informative, multifaceted and consistently supported by empathy for the helpless victims of hard-hearted politics.
